ALABAMA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT INFORMATION SHEET APPLICATION AND RESEARCH PROPOSAL DEADLINE IS January 31, 2008
The Alabama Academy of Science annually awards grants of up to $250.00 in support of student research. These grants
are for materials and/or services pertinent to the research, are given for one year, and are administered through the
academic department of the recipient. Grant proposals are evaluated by the Committee on Research, and are awarded
on the basis of scientific merit, clarity, and need. Grant proposals must meet the following eligibility requirements, and must
adhere to the procedure outlined below. Eligibility Requirements 1. The applicant must be a member (link to application form) of the Academy in good standing and must be enrolled in
a college or university in Alabama. 2. The proposed research must be original, the results of which have not yet been published. The student's Research Advisor must attest that the proposed work is original research of the type characteristic in the field. 3. When the research is presented or published, the applicant must be listed either as sole author, with acknowledgement
to the Research Advisor, or as first author, with the Research Advisor listed as a junior author. 4. The applicant must present the results of the supported research in a paper presented to the appropriate Section of the Academy at the Annual Meeting of the Academy, or in a manuscript submitted for publication to the Journal of the Alabama
Academy of Science, not later than 2 years after having received the grant. Procedure 1. The applicant must submit to the Chair, Committee on Research, instruction for submission is specified in the
application form and proposal, to be received no later than January 31, 2008. Materials submitted after the deadline
will not be considered. 2. Application materials include a completed Application for Student Research Grant plus a Research Proposal of not
more than five typed pages. The proposal should contain:
i) a statement of the specific aims of the proposed research,
ii) a brief review of the problem under consideration,
iii) a description of any preliminary results,
iv) a brief outline of the approach to be taken in the proposed research,
v) a bibliographic list of pertinent literature cited in the proposal, and
vi) a detailed budget estimate. 3. The Chair, Committee on Research, will validate the applicant's membership in the Academy and the applicant's enrollment in an Alabama college or university. 4. In a given year, awards made to students whose research is directed by the same faculty member shall not exceed 30% of the amount budgeted for student research grants. 5. In evaluating proposals, the Committee on Research shall make no distinction between those submitted by undergraduate versus graduate students. 6. Grant recipients will be announced at the Business Meeting of the Academy at the close of the Annual Meeting. 7. A record of funds disbursed should be available for review by the Chairman, Committee on Research.
